"I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft... As for me, give me a fixed gear!"
-- Henri Desgrange, L'Équipe article of 1902

Gear inches = Wheel size (inches) x Chain Ring Teeth ÷ Sprocket Teeth
For example, Gear = 26.31 x 46 ÷ 17 = 71.2
(700x23c wheel = 26.31")
Gear ratios maybe raised by changing the sprocket for a smaller one or lowered by changing it for a larger one. The effect of the change maybe calculated by multiplying the existing gear inches by the number of teeth on the original sprocket and dividing the result by the number of teeth on the proposed new sprocket.
E.g. A gear of 71.2 obtained with an 17 toothed sprocket and 46 toothed chain ring becomes 75.8 when a 16 toothed sprocket is fitted: 71.2 x 17 ÷ 16 = 75.8
